To the ancient Egyptians, the gate keeper of the world of our dreams is called Anubis.
He is the sacred jackal who can find his way through the darkest night and leave a trail that we may follow by day. The super sensitive hearing and sense of smell that the Egyptian coyotes have may be a clue to the sensory organs that help us to find our way through the dark realms. Anubis can be our guide into the astral world of sleep and help us to remember the symbols that speak within our dreams.
Jackals are also carrion-eaters and are revered as a companion of the Goddess as receiver of the dead. In India, the goddess of life and death is Kali and her consort is Shiva, whose name means jackal. Likewise in Egypt, Anubis is the consort to Nephthys the underworld aspect of the goddess Isis.
Anubis is the god of mummification and the guide of souls after death. He is the messenger between the worlds of life and death. Every night as we enter the "little death" of sleep, Anubis can help us to make our conscious and subconscious become interactive. As our dream world is integrated more fully into our waking world, we may bring our lives into a more complete balance.
