Isis Sculpture

Isis was the principal goddess of Egypt and was worshipped throughout the Greco-Roman world. One of Isis' many titles is the Golden Cow wetnurse to the human race and mother to the Golden Calf, Horus. She was the first personification of the Goddess that I personally worked with. Later, White Buffalo Woman of the Native American tradition, became part of my personal mythology of the Goddess.

For me these two goddess have merged into one that celebrates my genetic memory of Europe and America. This statue of White Buffalo Isis, stands on my altar as a doorway through which I can touch the radiance of the Great Goddess. As with any mythological icon, this sculpture is only a representation of the transcendent power that it symbolizes.

Much of the mythology of Isis, Osiris and Horus was adopted by Christianity. It is written that Jesus went to Egypt as a young boy and he must have studied in the temples of Isis for the root of his name is hidden within the name of Isis. Also his mother, the Virgin Mary, absorbed much of the iconography and the widespread worship of Isis.

Some of the early Christians in Rome called themselves Pastophori (pastors) which mean "shepherds" or "servants of Isis."

To her worshipers, Isis was known as the goddess of wisdom. She instructed humankind in the mysteries of life. The hieroglyphs on the base of the sculpture read "May I be joined with Isis, the Divine Mother." Soon after I finished this statue, CBS approached me to include my work on what was at that time their most widely viewed special in history. On the "Treasures of Tutankhamen" special, I read what was inscribed on the door to Isis' ancient temple as this sculpture was projected into millions of homes: "I, Isis am all that has been, that is or shall be; no mortal man hath ever me unveiled."
